Curriculum

The online MSc Public Health is comprised of 180 credits, featuring 10 core modules of 15 credits each and a final dissertation project worth 30 credits. Designed for those based in the UK as well as internationally, this programme will provide you with advanced knowledge and a deep understanding of contemporary public health principles, enabling you to develop innovative strategies to address pressing public health challenges. 

This programme is subject to approval. This means that it has received initial agreement from the University and is currently undergoing a detailed final approval exercise, through the University’s quality assurance processes. These processes are a requirement for all Higher Education Institutions within the UK, to ensure that programmes are of the highest standard. Occasionally there may be instances where the University may delay or not approve the introduction of the programme.

  • Global Perspectives in Public Health: Explore how to address the specific challenges of low- and middle-income countries in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals; investigate neglected tropical diseases; examine global nutrition and the multiple burdens of malnutrition; evaluate public health in hard-to-reach areas, conflict and emergencies.
  • Public Health in a Digital World: Analyse global and national strategies on digital health; examine the role of technology in public health; explore big data applications in public health; discover the use of AI and machine learning (including applications, ethics, governance and legislation); learn about digital communication strategies in health education promotion.
  • Food Security for Public Health: Analyse global food, water and soil security; evaluate food safety, sustainability and nutrition; examine ‘farm-to-fork’ issues as they affect public health; understand food as a system; learn to interpret UK and EU legislation; consider and discuss global applications; assess household and national food security and the effect on public health.
  • Strategies To Improve Population Health: Examine inequalities in health; analyse population health needs using multiple data sources; design comprehensive population health improvement strategies; apply systems thinking to complex health challenges; develop sustainable health improvement initiatives; address mental health; improve stakeholder engagement; understand governance and policy, including nutrition policy.

Admissions

To meet the entry requirements for the MSc Public Health, applicants must have a minimum of a Lower Second Class Honours (2:2) UK undergraduate degree, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. 

There is no application fee and standardised test scores are not required. 

To be considered for admission into the online MSc Public Health at the University of Surrey, you’ll need to submit the following materials:

Required:

  • Online application (no fee).

  • Scanned copies of signed/stamped qualifications (certificates or transcripts) to show how you meet, or expect to meet, the entry requirements.

    • To be considered official, transcripts need to be sent from the educational institutions directly to this email address: mphappsvcs@online.surrey.ac.uk  

    • If your transcripts are not in English, we may request an official English translation. 

    • University of Surrey alumni who have met the tertiary requirements for study are not required to submit official transcripts. 

  • Personal statement of 500 to 1,000 words, which should include any further information you feel is relevant to your application, including your current interests in the subject area and why you would like to pursue this programme. 

  • Evidence of your English language level (if English is not your first language).

  • Letters of recommendation: References are not required, but you are welcome to submit them if you believe they will support your application.
