Curriculum

The University of Birmingham’s online MSc Applications of Data Science consists of 180 credits made up of six modules (20 credits each) and a 60-credit dissertation module. With our curriculum you’ll gain a good grounding of data science techniques. From classifying data and using statistical models to designing clinical trials and understanding ethical data collection, the online MSc Applications of Data Science will give you the skills to make important, data-driven decisions.

As you progress through the programme, you’ll:

  • Learn to evaluate and classify different types of data: Learn to evaluate and critically select the appropriate methods to handle data as you develop a comprehensive understanding of different methods for capture, storage, and analysis. 
  • Apply a variety of statistical, algorithmic, and graphical approaches: Use the latest research and best professional practices in the field to guide you in applying data science in your field.
  • Make smarter judgements: Develop critical awareness to determine the robustness of data and gain a deeper understanding of ethical and legal frameworks that guide how data is handled.
  • Draw valid conclusions on complex, real-world issues: Conduct analyses to evaluate appropriate associated uncertainty measures and learn to communicate those conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Admissions

To be considered for admission into the online MSc Applications of Data Science, applicants typically should have earned a minimum Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) UK undergraduate degree or recognised equivalent international qualification in a STEMM+ discipline. No standardised test scores or application fees are required to apply.

You will need to submit the following materials when applying for the MSc Applications of Data Science:

  • Online application (no fee)

  • Contact details for one referee who has knowledge of your professional or academic ability

    • Please note that the contact email address of the referee must be a professional email address and not a personal one

  • Personal statement including a recommended 500 words outlining why you are interested in applying for this programme

  • Evidence of your English-language level no older than two years (if English is not your first language)


Prerequisites

To apply for the programme, you should have proficiency in statistics and probability or linear algebra. If you haven’t had numerate experience since the age of 16, you must take prerequisite courses in linear algebra or statistics to fulfil this requirement. While not a requirement, we also recommend that you have some proficiency in programming. 

Courses that cover these proficiencies can be found on edX and the majority of them are free to audit. However, if you want to demonstrate your competency in a particular area, you may wish to pursue the verified track of that course, which comes with an enrollment fee, graded feedback, and the opportunity to receive a verified certificate of completion.
